Building a Life Worth Living: How DBT Can Help You

DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) was originally developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder, but has since been found to be effective in treating a range of other conditions, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance use disorders. The four main components of DBT are:

  1. Mindfulness: The practice of being present and non-judgmental in the moment. This involves learning to observe thoughts, emotions, and sensations without reacting to them.
  2. Interpersonal effectiveness: Learning effective communication skills and how to build and maintain healthy relationships.
  3. Emotion regulation: Developing the ability to identify and manage intense emotions in healthy ways, such as through relaxation techniques or distraction.
  4. Distress tolerance: Learning how to tolerate distressing situations without engaging in harmful behaviors, such as self-harm or substance use.

One of the unique aspects of DBT is the concept of dialectics, which refers to the integration of seemingly opposing concepts. For example, in DBT, clients are encouraged to accept themselves as they are, while also striving for change and growth. This dialectic allows for both acceptance and change to occur simultaneously.

DBT typically involves both individual therapy and group skills training. In individual therapy, clients work with a therapist to develop skills and strategies to manage their emotions and behaviors. In group skills training, clients learn and practice the four components of DBT in a supportive group setting. These two things as well as phone coaching provides the client with a comprehensive adherent DBT program.
